TRANSITION AND INTEGRATION

From the Ground Up

Description of framework

The “From the Ground Up” framework supports young individuals transitioning from detention back into the community.
It provides a structured process focusing on education, personal growth, and employment readiness. The program integrates onsite (in detention) and offsite (community-based) activities to build essential life skills, foster resilience, and create pathways for sustainable employment and community reintegration.
The “From the Ground Up” framework is tailored for young individuals transitioning from detention as well as at-risk youth in need of structured support. Participants may be referred through detention facilities, social workers, parents, judicial recommendations, or even self-referrals. By addressing the unique needs of each participant, the program provides a clear pathway to personal growth, education, and sustainable community reintegration.

How do they benefit from this framework?

This framework bridges the gap between detention and community life by integrating:

  • Onsite Education and Training: Participants engage in vocational training, life skills development, and mentorship while still in detention.
  • Offsite Real-World Experiences: Community-based work placements, employment pathway planning, and ongoing mentorship provide practical applications of skills and support sustainable growth.

Through this comprehensive approach, participants gain the skills, experience, and resilience needed to thrive.By reducing recidivism and promoting employability, the program benefits both individuals and society, creating safer communities and stronger social connections. Additionally, it reduces the burden on social services and justice systems, fostering long-term positive change.

Program Outcomes

The program has successfully focused on equipping participants in detention with practical skills essential for their transition to community life. By emphasizing life skills, vocational readiness, and personal development rather than traditional academics, participants have shown increased engagement and accountability. Connections established with community partners and employers during detention have led to job placements, apprenticeships, and further education.
These outcomes have supported participants in achieving stable employment and meaningful reintegration into their communities.
